In Māori language "Titirangi" means "long streaks of cloud in the sky", but is sometimes referred to as "fringe of heaven". For a long time Titirangi had a reputation for bohemianism and eccentricity. It is still home to many artists and writers. It is believed that Rakataura, the tohunga on the Tainui canoe, decided upon the name Titirangi.
